Sunflowers is a rock band from Milwaukee Wi, making tunes in your moms bedroom.
Sunflowers are always coming and going with the seasons. The band Sunflowers works in the same way. Sunflowers are a very young, but very inspired band. The four flowers are Colin Wilkinson, Johnny Guzikowski, Kevin Bay and Kevin Allie who are all from Milwaukee, WI. Colin, Johnny and Kevin Allie were high school buddies who played music together on occasion, but Kevin Bay and Colin had been writing music together with other musical projects in high school with the classic rock outfit, The Love Commandos and their side project The Basement Sessions.
Sunflowers began writing together in the summer of 2009 after receiving an old sixties reel-to-reel tape recorder. With the possession of the tape machine and a couple microphones, music started to flow out of the moldy basement.
With their first record they made their first album called Beezlebub Nibbles On Sunflowers On Tape. The album was recorded in three weeks and had the sound of old Velvet Underground takes. After planting the seeds of all of them as a band, there was nowhere to go, but grow. After a couple months’ hiatus, they came back with their latest recordings Frozen Molecules Of Summer. This was made during the winter of 09/10. They wanted to try something a little bit different. Garage Band and one microphone were used on Frozen. Beezlebub had more of a summer feel with sitars, grungy guitars, and rotting drums with moldy beer bottles in them. Frozen was more haunting, cold and sadder content in their lyrics and music, due to the arctic weather. They brought in a variety of instruments and influence to their music.
Both albums were made for free. They used the “pay-what-you-want” approach on the Internet. Sunflowers have started playing shows in Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. They are now in the mists of writing new songs and playing on recording new material and remaking old songs for better recording quality in the up and coming fall. Keep you eyes open for new material and remember…you gotta water the Sunflowers.
